10 tips for Drivers
1. Be aware of the presence of bicyclists and pedestrians especially near schools
2. Communicate with pedestrians and bicyclists
Come to a complete stop at stop signs and use your turn signals so bicyclists and pedestrians know where you are going.
3. When stopping at an intersection, leave the crosswalk clear for pedestrians
4. Obey traffic laws and respect the cyclist's right to be on the road
Be familiar with the traffic laws in your state and commmunity. Some comunities require bicycles to ride in the street.
5. Do not honk your horn at a bicyclist
A honked horn can startle a cyclist causing swerving or loss of control.
6. Use extra caution when passing a bicycle on the road
Wait for an opportunity to pass where all parties have adequate space
7. When in doubt, yield to bicyclists and pedestrians
8. Be careful when opening your vehicle door if parked on-street
9. Be aware that bicyclists may swerve to avoid road hazards
10. Be patient with bicyclists, especially children who are still learning the rules of the road
