3. Wear a helmet

4. Obey traffic laws
Be familiar with the traffic laws in your state and commmunity. Remember that a bicycle is a vehicle.
5. Communicate with other vehicles
Make eye contact with motorists whenever possible. Use hand signals well in advance of intersections to make your intentions clear.
6. Be aware of hazards
Watch the road ahead of you for potholes, glass, fallen branches, large cracks and other objects in your path.
7. Ride as close as possible to the right side of the road
Stay as close to the right side of the road as possible. Depending on where you live, riding on the sidewalk may be permitted.
8. Always ride with the flow of traffic
Never ride against the flow of traffic
9. Avoid riding at night, but if you do always use a headlight, taillight and reflectors
When riding after dark, you must use a white light visible up to 500 ft in the front, and a red light visible up to 500 ft to the rear
